Tutorial 04

Gee, I'm on a roll ;) Anyway today we'll be learning how to make:

...from this:

I'm making this in PSP8 (should be easily translatable) and dial up users should be a little wary since I have a few pictures (30 or so 100x100 images) in this tutorial. =]

OKAY PEOPLE =] Welcome back to Tutorial school! ....yadda yadda yadda. So anyway, open up your graphics program so we'll be ready to start!

1. We are going to be using this image from www.rupert-grint.co.uk/gallery.
http://www.rupert-grint.co.uk/gallery/displayimage.php?album=127&pos=66 < link

2. Resize your image and crop it to 100x100.
Resized Image of the Trio >

3. Duplicate your image 3 times. Set the first layer (the one immediately above "Background") to Screen - 100%. Set the layer above Screen (100%) to Screen, as well, but this time at 46%. Then, make the top layer 100% Soft Light.

4. Make a new raster layer, and fill it in with #0B123F.  Set to exclusion at 74%:
 >

5. Now, make a new raster layer and fill it with a brown color. I used #754241. Then I set the layer to Soft Light at 66%.
 >

6. Now take this pink gradient, paste it as a new layer, and set it to Soft Light at 100%.
 >
**Once again, I have absoloutely no freaking idea who the gradient is by, so if you know, comment and tell me =]

7. After, take this blue gradient and paste it as a new layer. Next, flip it upside down. Now set it to Burn at 100%.
 >
**Once again, no idea who gradient is by. If you know, comment and tell me.

8. Now, duplicate your background layer and bring it to the top. Set it to Saturation at 24%.

9. Duplicate the Saturation layer and set it to Soft Light - 32%. Merge all layers.

10. Sharpen as much as you want. I would suggest after merging the layers, duplicate the new image and keep the mode on "Normal". Then, sharpen once. If it's too much, use the opacity bar to tone down your sharpness. In this case, I did just that, and toned the sharpness down using the opacity bar to about 54%.

11. Okay, now we are going to do masking. Paste this brush as a new image, then take the icon of the trio and paste as a new layer. Move around to fit your taste. =] I beleive that this brush is by [info]77words.
 >
Oh, and even though this isnt relevant to the tutorial, AWWWWW @ THE TRIO. Okay, back to the tutorial ;3

12. Now, copy the picture with the photo frame, and paste as a new image. Now, you have 2 of the same image (photo frame mask). On your second image crop it around the frame. Now,  create a new raster layer and fill the smaller image in with black. Then, set the layer to Color (L) so that it is now Black and white. Merge all layers.

13. Copy that picture, and paste it on the bottom of your colored one on the image with the colored mask. I did that, and now mine looks like this:

Your image can  cut off on the right or left side, too, it does not necessarily have to be directly under it. I did it directly under the colored image because it looks much neater in my opinion ;)

14. Great! We're almost done, so dont worry :) Now, take a round brush that has a soft circumference, like the one below, and select the color #F20353. Make a spot by the left side (where Ron & Harry are). It does not make a difference if the color spills over into the next frame, in fact, thats how you want it to be.
 >

15. Lastly, I'm going to take this brush (bottom) and make a line by the trees with it (top right hand corner) in white.
 >

YAY! You're done

You can do so much stuff with this icon. If you wanted to, you could lighten it (1) or make it darker (2) or even make it glowier (3)!
1)  Duplicate layer, set to Screen at 80%
2)  Duplicate layer, set to Multiply at 32%
3)  Duplicate layer, set to Soft Light at 100%

Hopefully I explained everything easily enough. If you have any questions please comment and I'll do my best to answer them. If you'd like to share your finished icons with me, please dont hesitate to do so cause I love to see them! ^^;

ENJOY! <3
